A Conversation With Belen:

What drew you to the field of process engineering?

I have always been interested in math and science, but I ended up in the field of process engineering somewhat by accident. I originally planned to attend medical school after college. I chose chemical engineering as my major because it covered most of the pre-med curriculum while offering a stronger backup option than pure chemistry.

Through my coursework and summer internships, I realized I was more interested in pursuing engineering than medicine. Within chemical engineering, I initially specialized in biomolecular engineering before transitioning to process engineering. That combination ultimately proved to be a perfect fit for the life sciences industry.

What made you decide to continue growing your career at GFT?

My previous experience was primarily on the owner’s side of pharmaceutical capital projects. Joining GFT gave me the opportunity to work on a wider variety of projects with multiple clients across new industries. I was excited by the chance to apply and expand my skills through new and diverse challenges.

GFT’s people-centric culture also drew me in. While the company is deeply committed to its clients, it also prioritizes employee development and quality of life. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow with the company both personally and professionally.

What aspect of your work do you find most rewarding?

Optimizing existing systems is the most rewarding part of my work. I enjoy learning how a system operates, identifying opportunities for improvement, and delivering measurable results.

For example, on one project, I improved clean-in-place (CIP) systems across most of the building equipment, reducing cycle times by 42% and water use by 13%. I was later asked to review a filter press that had been outside the original scope and was causing persistent challenges. By developing and testing a new approach using the existing equipment, I identified a solution that projected a 20 to 30% reduction in cycle times and a 20 to 40% reduction in water use, while maintaining reliable cleaning.

“Belen brings deep expertise in process engineering and life sciences, along with a thoughtful, steady approach that makes her a trusted partner to both clients and colleagues. She has a way of balancing technical knowledge with practical problem-solving, and her passion for the work truly comes through in every project she’s part of.”

What are your favorite hobbies?

I spend most of my free time working on home improvement projects and training my dog for scent work and rally obedience competitions. I also recently started painting.
