A Conversation With Brian:
Let’s talk about your career journey to becoming electrical practice director.
My father, an electrical engineer, inspired me. I was always fascinated with taking things apart and putting them back together. This natural inclination led me to pursue engineering. When I graduated from college in 1997, a family member with a connection in the firm’s electrical group referred me to GFT. I have been here ever since.
Initially, the firm hired me to design electronic tolling systems. Still, as my career progressed, the variety of projects, from wastewater treatment facilities to tunnel inspections and even the renovation of the Dauphin County Courthouse, has kept my career exciting.
Along the way, I earned my professional engineer (PE) license, which was crucial for taking on more responsible roles. As I gained experience across multiple projects, I had great mentors who helped propel my career forward. These leaders challenged me to grow and gain more experience — from helping the firm achieve geographic growth to managing design for building systems engineering disciplines.
What has been your most memorable project?
One standout project for me was the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) bus operation and maintenance campus. This project transformed a contaminated 12-acre site into a 100,600-square-foot LEED® Silver certified bus maintenance facility. My Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP BD+C) credential was invaluable in implementing sustainable design practices throughout the project. This project connected me with the transit and rail facilities maintenance group within our organization and significantly shaped my career.
Another memorable experience was the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel and Pedestrian Plaza project in Florida, which received recognition from the American Society of Highway Engineers and the American Council of Engineering Companies. As a Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA), I ensured all systems functioned optimally. This project emphasized the importance of teamwork and featured many innovations that improved both transportation efficiency and quality of life.
How has the company supported your professional development and career growth?
The firm has supported my growth from an entry-level engineer to my current role as electrical practice director. I have enjoyed exposure to a wide variety of experiences. I also think about how my mentors helped me navigate the technical side of engineering and taught me the leadership skills I needed to manage projects and my team at various points.
How are you giving back to the engineering profession?
As a Messiah College (now Messiah University) student, I participated in the Messiah Collaboratory, a center for project-based learning. Since then, I have supported many student teams and participated in project reviews.
Recently, I’ve supported the solar photovoltaic team. This group collaborated with the Rays of Peace organization in 2023/2024 to develop and implement a grid-tied solar system with battery storage. I have assisted students in applying sustainable infrastructure principles to these projects. Rays of Peace operates a children’s home and an anti-human trafficking ministry near Bangalore, India, where this project will enhance energy reliability and sustainability. This work with students is an integral part of my professional life outside my company role.
How does your work contribute to the company’s vision?
My work in the electrical field directly contributes to the firm’s vision of creating a better future by focusing on resilience and sustainability. As a registered environmental professional (REP) and certified energy manager (CEA), I bring specialized knowledge to projects like the Messiah University student enhancement project, including a one-megawatt cogeneration facility. Additionally, my experience with federal government projects, such as the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s Training Support Center, reinforces our client’s commitment to energy efficiency and resilience. My experience managing building systems projects and my belief in teamwork ensures successful project delivery for our clients, aligning with the company’s vision.
“Brian’s passion for engineering and mentorship shines through in everything he does. From innovative transit projects to mission-critical federal work, he brings a focus on resilience, sustainability, and teamwork. His leadership elevates our electrical practice and inspires the next generation of engineers.”

Tell us about your family and your favorite family tradition.
I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 26 years, and we have four children. Since 2005, my family has enjoyed annual camping trips using our travel trailer. Some of our favorite destinations include Cedar Run, Pennsylvania, along the Pine Creek Rail to Trail, where we embrace the great outdoors and create lasting memories together. We also love to go to Washington, D.C., and Florida.
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers?
I advise aspiring engineers to embrace every opportunity for learning and growth. Seek mentors who can guide your career, and don’t hesitate to take on new challenges. I also recommend pursuing professional credentials that align with your interests – whether professional licensure, sustainability certifications, or specialized technical qualifications. Each experience will contribute to your professional development and help you make a meaningful impact.
