A Conversation With Bridget:

What first sparked your interest in engineering?

My father played a big role. Outside of his dentistry career, he was an enthusiastic home builder. During one project, groundwater started seeping through a major load-bearing wall, and the situation looked serious. He called in someone everyone on site referred to as “the engineer.” I later learned his name was Paul Mujugumbya, a civil and structural engineer, who developed a simple, low-cost waterproofing solution. Years later, he taught my second-year structures course. It felt like a full-circle moment.

Beyond that, I was always a curious child. Many of the watches I received as gifts did not survive for long. I once painted the inside of a watch, which stopped the hands and dial from moving, and that was the end of my excuses. I also tried to test the difference between “water-resistant” and “waterproof.” Water bottles, old radios, and other household items did not stand a chance as I took them apart to understand how they worked.

What inspired you to join GFT, and what makes you stay?

I joined GFT to help drive its growth. I enjoy the challenge of bringing different organizations together and shaping a shared identity and brand that clients and employees recognize.

In the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, we’re not just selling services; we’re offering expertise and trusted solutions. That requires a careful balance between honoring legacy strengths and creating space for new possibilities. I’m especially drawn to the process of building something new while connecting it to what came before.

I do my best work in environments where there’s something to build, grow, and shape. I’m adaptable and energized by change. If there’s a new market to enter, a brand to define, or a new direction to explore, that’s where I add the most value.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

The poem “Desiderata” by Max Ehrmann (1927) remains one of the most holistic sources of life advice I’ve come across. I often share two key messages with colleagues, clients, friends, and family:

  • Listen to others. Everyone has a story.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others. There will be greater and lesser people than yourself.

“What stands out about Bridget is her combination of intellect, curiosity, and purpose. She brings a drive to understand how things work and a commitment to creating opportunities for others. That mindset is exactly what we need as we grow our Aviation practice and continue building something meaningful at GFT.”

Tell us about an educational or professional success story that you’re proud of.

This isn’t one specific achievement, but a life story shaped by the legacy I come from.

I’m usually private about my family, but their influence matters here. I’m a third-generation college graduate. My grandfather was an educator, my father is a dentist, and my mother is a retired medical doctor. Both of my grandfathers ran schools in their villages, often providing free education to children who otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance.

I later learned that my maternal great-grandfather worked on infrastructure projects in the 1920s. In many ways, I’ve followed a similar path. Engineering has taken me around the world, and I earned my doctorate at 28.

What I’m most proud of is continuing that thread. Over the past 20 years, I’ve helped support many children through school, carrying forward the same belief in access to education.

For me, success is not just personal achievement. It’s about extending that legacy and creating opportunities for others.

What hobbies or routines help you recharge?

I recharge by walking, praying, and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy cooking. It’s my version of eat, pray, walk, and love.

I also love to unwind with a good, nail-biting crime or thriller series.

What is a fun fact about you that your colleagues may not know?

A fun fact about me is that I’ve been exploring the world since my first international trip in 1998. At one point, I had a Reader’s Digest list of 100 places to see before you die, and I checked off 36. I’ve moved too many times to find that article now, but the habit stuck. Every year, without fail, I visit somewhere new.

In the photos above, I’ve shared a few views from the past five years.
