A Conversation With Danielle:

Tell us about your experience as an interior designer. Why did you choose this profession?

I’ve enjoyed the arts and architecture since high school. I later attended Seton Hill College, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in interior design. Classes in art, drafting, and textiles fueled my excitement for this career path.

Another motivator was my dad, who was a contractor. There were always projects to work on, and he was a great instructor. The most challenging and rewarding project we worked on was stone-casing my childhood home. It was a great hands-on experience, which, for me, is the best way to learn. This partnership also taught me that working alongside someone you admire provides a wealth of benefits, including the appreciation of human connection and how rewarding it can be when developed with patience and kindness.

I have been working in the industry since Generation Z came to be. With over 20 years in the industry, I have worked on projects in diverse markets, ranging from K-12 and higher education institutions to civic and transit agencies. Each project is unique, from designing new buildings to renovating existing spaces. These diverse opportunities have helped me grow, learn, and provide thoughtful solutions.

Tell us about your role and responsibilities. What solutions do you provide to your clients?

As an interior designer, I create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that align with our clients’ visions and project requirements. I enjoy working with clients, listening to their needs, applying my problem-solving skills, and aspiring to meet those requirements with innovative solutions. It’s my goal for those individuals to have an enriching and safe environment and for the challenges we tackle to be remembered for their inspiring resolutions.

My responsibilities encompass a broad range of tasks, including:

Client Collaboration: I work closely with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and goals. This involves communication skills such as conducting interviews, presenting design concepts, and collaborating to ensure the final design meets their expectations. For example, during an Amtrak commercial building project, I partnered with the client to develop a design that met the round-the-clock functional needs of the user group while reflecting the organization’s culture and values. This involved numerous workshops and presentations, ensuring that every stakeholder’s voice was heard.

Space Planning: In space planning, I develop detailed plans that optimize the use of available areas, ensuring that the layout is efficient and visually appealing. This includes considering factors such as traffic flow, accessibility, and integrating architectural elements. A recent project where space planning was crucial was a branch location and call center for the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration. The goal of this project included optimizing the space for both customers and staff, retail opportunities, and back-office functions, ensuring a seamless and efficient layout for all.

Material and Finish Selection: I select appropriate materials, finishes, and furnishings that meet the functional needs and the desired aesthetic of the project. This involves researching new products, coordinating with suppliers, and staying updated on industry trends. At Penn State University, one of my current projects is a 13,000-square-foot addition and renovation to a turbine research facility for the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) lab. It’s a fascinating project that requires balance between research and office spaces. As you might imagine, this leading research facility’s materials and finishes are diverse.

Lighting Design: I design lighting schemes that enhance the ambiance and functionality of spaces. This includes selecting light fixtures, planning the placement of lighting, and ensuring that the design meets energy efficiency Safety is another area of concern during this phase. During a recent corporate office renovation project, I designed a lighting scheme that utilized natural light to reduce energy consumption while enhancing employee productivity and well-being. The renovation design included a sloped ceiling to reflect the natural light and incorporated existing skylights to refresh an existing facility.

Project Coordination: I collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and other team members to ensure that the interior design integrates seamlessly with the overall project. This involves reviewing drawings, attending site meetings, and providing guidance during construction. There is often coordination with multiple teams to ensure that the design maintains the required functionality while adhering to strict regulatory standards. The other aspect is monitoring project costs and timelines, adjusting as needed to keep the project on track financially, and ensuring that deadlines are met.

Tell us more about the NCIDQ certification.

The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) is a certification representing a high standard of professional competency in interior design. The certification process requires a rigorous combination of education and work experience. Candidates need to complete a degree in interior design from an accredited program and gain several years of professional experience before sitting for the exams. They must then pass a series of exams assessing design knowledge and skills in core competencies required to protect public health, safety, and welfare. These competencies include building codes, accessibility, space planning, and lighting design.

Achieving NCIDQ certification is a significant accomplishment in the interior design industry and is often a requirement for obtaining licensure in states and provinces where interior design is regulated.

Which aspects of your work bring you the greatest sense of fulfillment?

I find immense fulfillment in renovation projects, allowing me to blend the old with the new. These design projects provide a unique opportunity to preserve a structure’s character while transforming it into a functional and visually pleasing space for modern use. The challenges that come with renovations are part of what makes them so rewarding—there’s a deep satisfaction in overcoming obstacles and seeing generations of architecture come together flawlessly.

In addition, as an outdoor enthusiast, I’m passionate about incorporating sustainable design practices into my work. I prioritize environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions to ensure that the spaces I design meet today’s needs and contribute positively to our environment. With each project, I strive to create spaces that are both beautiful and sustainable, giving back to our communities in a meaningful way.
