A Conversation With Mandar:

What made you decide to become an electrical engineer?

My interest in electrical engineering started with early exposure in school and grew through experience across industries like oil and gas, ports, education, water, and transportation.

Over time, I realized I enjoy not just the technical side, but applying those skills to solve larger, more complex client challenges — especially as technologies continue to evolve with hydrogen, solar, battery storage, and increasing power demands.

That experience led me into a leadership role, where I could take a broader view of projects, work closely with clients to understand their challenges, and support our electrical engineering team.

What does a normal day look like working in the firm’s Buildings & Places Business Group?

GFT’s Buildings & Places practice integrates building disciplines, creating facilities built to last, flex with change, and work the way their occupants do. When a project is high-stakes, schedules are fixed, and the decisions made early carry consequences for decades — that’s when organizations turn to GFT.

My day is split between growth and execution. On one side, I’m focused on expanding our presence in the West by building relationships, developing opportunities, and creating new opportunities for our team.

On the other, I stay closely connected to our projects and people to help ensure we’re delivering for our clients and supporting our team effectively. At the end of the day, it’s about keeping everything aligned: clients, team, and growth.

What inspired you to join GFT and what makes you stay?

What initially drew me to GFT was its commitment to steady, sustainable growth and the opportunity to help build something meaningful while developing a strong project portfolio through consistent delivery.

The trust, support, and long-term vision from leadership have played a big role in my experience at GFT. They’ve created an environment where we have the resources to navigate challenges while staying focused on the bigger picture. Most importantly, it’s the people. Working alongside talented colleagues who genuinely care about each other and our clients is what motivates me every day.

“Mandar has delivered more than 50 projects across California in seven years. He understands the work, the relationships, and how to execute. That foundation is driving our next phase of strategic growth in the California market for Buildings & Places, and we are just getting started.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is that the process is more important than the result because the result is often a byproduct of the work that comes before it.

I try to apply that mindset by focusing on continuous learning, staying present, and making sure we’re doing the right things along the way rather than simply chasing outcomes.

Tell us about an educational or professional success story that you’re proud of.

One accomplishment I’m particularly proud of is building and scaling our electrical practice into a high-performing team that has delivered more than 50 projects across California in the past seven years.

What makes that achievement meaningful isn’t just the volume of work, but how we’ve approached it. We’ve built a scalable, repeatable foundation through standardized delivery processes, strong design platforms, and a culture of continuous improvement.

We’ve also positioned the team to stay ahead of key industry shifts, including Title 24, electrification, distributed energy systems, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen. That combination of building capability, delivering consistently, and adapting to where the market is headed has allowed us to create long-term value for both our clients and our team.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy staying active through tennis, cricket, soccer, and running. When I want to slow things down, I enjoy playing chess. Outside of that, I love spending time with my wife and kids and planning our next trip, which is usually somewhere in the mountains.

Something many people may not know about me is that I’m an avid hiker and once summited Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States. I did it in a single 15-hour trek, tackling all 99 switchbacks along the way.
