Al Rendl Regional Pumping Station Named Among the “Best of 2024” by CMAA Houston

Project is a Key Asset in the North Harris County Regional Water Authority’s Groundwater Reduction Plan

The Construction Management Association of America’s (CMAA) Houston Chapter awarded the Al Rendl Regional Pumping Station, a 40.3 million gallons per day (MGD) treated water pumping station, a “Best of 2024” distinction at its annual Hard Hatters Gala.

Owned by the North Harris County Regional Water Authority (NHCRWA), the project was selected for excellence in construction management and its significant contributions to sustainable water supply infrastructure in the Houston area. The awards program, which recognizes the entire life cycle of a project, celebrated the achievements of NHCRWA as owner, GFT as lead designer, Freese & Nichols as construction manager and inspector, Five Companies, LLC as contractor, and AECOM as program manager.

The new facility is an integral part of NHCRWA’s Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP), which aims to mitigate land subsidence caused by decades of groundwater pumping that was required to meet drinking water demand fueled by rapid regional growth. Under the plan, NHCRWA will reduce its groundwater use by 80% by 2035.

The state-of-the-art pumping station includes two 12.5-million-gallon ground storage tanks, advanced chemical feed systems for chloramine disinfection, a stormwater detention pond, and administrative and maintenance buildings. Key features also include a medium-voltage electrical system, an on-site sanitary sewer lift station, and an off-site force main. The station was integrated with NHCRWA’s existing surface water transmission infrastructure and supported with two 14,000 gallons per minute (GPM) and two 7,000 GPM horizontal split case centrifugal pumps, along with discharge piping and a hydropneumatic system.

The pumping station helps meet the increasing water needs of North Harris County residents by connecting with surface water sources to supply treated water directly to local communities. Despite challenges related to the project’s urban setting, stormwater drainage, power infrastructure complexities, supply chain delays, and more, the project team maintained an unwavering commitment to budget and quality, delivering this critical infrastructure within the anticipated project cost of $102.15 million.

The CMAA Houston Hard Hatters Gala is an annual event celebrating the best of construction management. It brings together professionals across the industry to recognize exemplary projects that set new standards in innovation, quality, and project delivery. This accolade reflects the firm’s continued dedication to engineering excellence and long-term, sustainable solutions that enhance resilience and quality of life in the communities it serves.
