Fort Worth Smart Mobility Program Supported by GFT Earns Smart 20 Award

The City of Fort Worth has been recognized as a Smart 20 Award recipient for its SMARTer Weather, Safer Mobility Initiative, a nationally recognized smart mobility program supported by GFT. The award, presented at the Smart Cities Connect Spring Conference & Expo, honors projects globally that demonstrate innovation, scalability, and cross‑sector collaboration.

Texas Planning Group Leader Wu Ying, PE, AICP, ENV SP, said, “It’s been a privilege for GFT to support the City of Fort Worth on a project that demonstrates how innovative, hyper-local data can transform how cities plan, operate, and respond in real time.”

GFT served as a key technical and strategic partner to the city, supporting the management of its $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grant and helping advance the initiative from concept through implementation. Our team contributed digital delivery and communications tools, including developing the project website, creating a weather sensor data dashboard, and preparing graphics and narratives to support public engagement and stakeholder alignment. GFT also supported sensor installation coordination, provided technical collaboration with project partners, including TruWeather Solutions and other stakeholders, and advised the city on scaling the system and advancing future phases of technology deployment, positioning Fort Worth for continued innovation in data-driven mobility and public safety.

At the program’s core is an intelligent micro‑weather sensor network that delivers highly localized, real‑time weather data installed within the Mobility Innovation Zone at AllianceTexas, a master-planned development where next-generation transportation technologies are tested. The system is powered by a network of 27 nonintrusive sensors installed at key locations and mounted on existing infrastructure such as light poles and rooftops. The system integrates a network of sensors, data modeling, and a centralized platform to deliver real-time weather intelligence. By unifying multiple weather data sources into a single platform, the system improves data consistency and strengthens operational reliability for both current and emerging mobility systems. Additionally, low‑altitude and surface sensors with advanced micro‑weather modeling enhance decision‑making for roadway users, autonomous vehicles, drones, and emerging mobility technologies.

Projects like Fort Worth’s SMARTer Weather initiative demonstrate how GFT partners with cities to deliver technology-enabled transportation solutions that improve safety, enhance real-time decision-making, and support emerging mobility systems. As communities continue to invest in digital infrastructure, GFT is helping clients translate innovation into practical, scalable outcomes.
