New Design Guidelines for Steel Railroad Bridges

The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) and the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA) jointly announced the publication of the “Guidelines for the Design of Steel Railroad Bridges for Constructability and Fabrication.” This comprehensive guide aims to standardize practices for designing and constructing steel railroad bridges. It emphasizes best practices and recommendations to ensure adaptability to various local statutes and owner preferences.

Eric Dues, PE, SE, and Lawrence Kirchner, PE, SE, served as contributing authors. Dues, GFT’s bridge manager, and Kirchner, GFT’s national bridge practice leader, are examples of the significant industry expertise available at GFT thanks to the recent merger.

The publication includes key topics, including:

  • Special Considerations for Railroad Bridges: Unique aspects of railroad bridge design, such as regulatory and operating environments, maintenance, and inspection protocols specific to railroads.
  • Design: Detailed guidelines for selecting main supporting members, span lengths, and girder arrangements.
  • Constructability and Fabrication: Practical designs for fabrication and construction, including recommendations on material thickness, connection details, and the use of advanced construction techniques like self-propelled modular transporters for efficient bridge assembly and placement.
  • Sustainability: Use of recycled materials and designs that optimize material and labor, like accelerated bridge construction techniques to reduce energy consumption and enhance safety.
  • Construction Practices: Best practices for contracting methods, quality control testing, and construction management.

The publication aims to facilitate efficient, safe, and sustainable steel railroad bridges by promoting standardized practices and allowing for flexibility to meet specific project needs.
