In the News: GFT Team Advances Integrated Seismic Safety for Hydropower

Six GFT seismic experts authored “From Ground Motion to Confidence” in International Water Power and Dam Construction magazine:

  • Aimee Corn, PE, Senior Structural Engineer.
  • Justin Beutel, PE, Principal Civil Engineer.
  • Kwestan Salimi, PhD, PE, Senior Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Michael Gray, PG, CEG, Principal Engineering Geologist.
  • Dina Hunt, PE, Vice President & Chief Seismic Hazard Engineer.

The article outlines a fully integrated approach to seismic safety for hydropower systems. With more than half of U.S. dams built before modern seismic science, the challenge today is ensuring entire systems, not just individual structures, can continue operating safely after an earthquake.

The authors explain how GFT unites seismic hazard analysis, deformation modeling, and structural assessment within one collaborative team to eliminate analytical gaps and strengthen consistency. By aligning geologic, geotechnical, and structural expertise from fault characterization through performance evaluation, the team reduces uncertainty, builds trust with dam owners and regulators, and delivers confidence alongside compliance.
