The podcast showcases leaders in the dam safety field, and Hess’ selection underscores our firm’s position as one of the nation’s top engineering firms in this critical sector. Hess is a vice president at GFT, as well as a hydrology and hydraulics group manager and a senior dams and hydraulics project engineer.

During the wide-ranging discussion, Hess discusses her education, why she chose a career in civil engineering over industrial engineering, her journey to dam safety, changes in engineering over the past 25 years, the importance of mentorship, and how certain projects impacted her the most.

“When I think back to people who influenced me the most, it was definitely Dr. Miller,” said Hess. “He encouraged me to go to graduate school, go into the water resources field, and apply for the National Science Foundation scholarship, which I received. When it came time for me to go to work, he said I should work for GFT. He made some phone calls and got me an interview. When I walked into GFT, I knew this was the place for me.”

She also discusses how the firm supported her professionally and personally as her family grew, reflecting the company’s commitment to work-life balance and employee development. Additionally, she offers advice for young professionals, providing a valuable perspective for those looking to build their dam safety careers. She is an advocate for professional association involvement, especially ASDSO. Hess recommends getting involved, building relationships, and looking for ways to help.
