GFT, in a joint venture with COWI, has been awarded a $25.4 million construction management contract by the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) for the Syphon Reservoir Upgrade in Orange County, California.

The project will expand the Syphon Reservoir capacity from 500 to 5,000 acre-feet, increasing recycled water capacity for irrigation and drought resiliency. The project will strengthen Orange County’s water reliability, reducing imported water demand and supporting sustainable resource management.

“We are proud to partner with COWI and IRWD to help deliver a safer, more resilient Syphon Reservoir that strengthens Orange County’s drought preparedness and recycled water reliability,” said Anthony Ferruccio, PE, GFT Division President for Construction Services.

The joint venture will oversee construction management, stakeholder coordination, and quality assurance. “Our focus is on safe execution, clear coordination, and cost-effective delivery so IRWD can realize the project’s long-term water supply benefits,” said Edward Durazo, GFT vice president and Syphon Reservoir project manager.

The Syphon Reservoir improvement project is one of the region’s most significant recycled water storage upgrades. With construction beginning in mid-2026, the improvements will provide lasting benefits to the community and serve as a model of resilient water infrastructure.
