The Farm to Market (FM) 1409 Roadway Extension Project, recently featured in the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Scanner, has transformed mobility in rural East Texas. Principal Project Managers Blair Stocker, PE, and Larry Marr, PE, reveal how this four-mile extension, including a new half-mile bridge and paved shoulders, reduces congestion, improves access to I-10, and supports the area’s growing residential and commercial developments.

Overcoming challenges like 24 pipeline crossings and complex drainage, the FM 1409 extension also strengthens the region’s emergency management infrastructure by improving connections to critical routes and enhancing the area’s overall preparedness.

The ASHE Houston Section honored the project with its 2023 Project of the Year Award Under $20 Million, celebrating its benefits to the rural Texas economy and community.
