Mukhopadhyay Authors Textbook on Applied Hydrology

Water resources engineering expert Biswajit Mukhopadhyay, PhD, PE, CFM, DWRE, FASCE, has authored “Applied Hydrology,” a comprehensive textbook that bridges the gap between academic theory and industry practice. Reviewed by distinguished Texas A&M University professor Vijay Singh, PhD, PE, DWRE, FASCE, a world authority in hydrology, this work expertly integrates fundamental principles of hydrology with real-world applications, making it a practical resource for both students and professionals.

“Applied Hydrology” lays a solid foundation with essential mathematics and statistical hydrology before advancing to topics like reservoir operations, water resources management, and climate change impacts. The textbook emphasizes modern software, equipping readers with the latest tools and techniques needed to excel in the field.

Published by Cambridge University Press, the book has been recognized for its authoritative yet user-friendly style. Jerry Cotter, former chief of the water resources branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fort Worth District, described the book as “one of the most thorough and in-depth coverages of a wide range of hydrologic methods and topics” and “an excellent how-to for hydrologists across the U.S. and many other countries.”

Ataul Hannan, director of the planning division of the Harris County Flood Control District, noted that the book “addresses all essential theories and methods of applied hydrology in detail, and at the same time seamlessly integrates the principles with practice using the current industry standard software.”

“I am grateful to have been able to provide a book that can serve as a resource for those learning about advanced engineering and as a trusted reference for practicing engineers navigating the complexities of contemporary hydrology,” said Mukhopadhyay. “By including clear, thorough presentations of global case studies, examples, and exercises in the book, I hope to enhance conceptual understanding and practical problem-solving skills.”

Dr. Mukhopadhyay, who is based in Houston, Texas, holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the University of Calcutta, a Master of Engineering degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a doctorate in geosciences from the University of Texas at Dallas. With over 35 years of experience, he supports the firm’s rapidly growing Texas operations as a geotechnical, dams, and hydraulics manager, continuing to contribute his extensive expertise to the field of water resources engineering.
