Restoring CSX’s Blue Ridge Subdivision

Reconnecting Communities and Rebuilding a Key Freight Corridor Post Hurricane Helene

Blue Ridge Subdivision Reopens

Nearly one year after Hurricane Helene’s historic floods devastated multiple communities in the Southeast, CSX celebrated the reopening of the Blue Ridge Subdivision. This vital 60-mile freight corridor connects Appalachian communities and businesses to the national rail network. The ribbon-cutting signaled not only the restoration of a critical transportation infrastructure link but also celebrated resilience, recovery, and partnership.

At GFT, we believe in shaping the Infrastructure of Life, designing and rebuilding systems to sustain communities, economies, and everyday life. Our partnership with CSX on the Blue Ridge Subdivision restoration reflects that mission in action: combining expertise, ingenuity, and collaboration to help communities recover stronger than before.

A Milestone in Recovery and Resilience

When Hurricane Helene struck in September 2024, it caused extensive damage to the Blue Ridge Subdivision, washing out railbeds, bridges, and embankments. Within days, CSX mobilized a large-scale recovery effort, partnering with state and federal agencies, local communities, and trusted engineering and construction partners. GFT served as the emergency response program and construction manager.

Together, the team rebuilt one of CSX’s most important north-south routes, restoring service in less than a year. The accomplishment demonstrates the power of collaboration and the collective commitment to keeping America’s freight — and communities — moving.

Rebuilding for the Future

Restoration efforts included reconstructing key bridges and retaining walls, upgrading drainage systems, and reinforcing embankments designed for greater long-term resiliency. More than 570,000 man-hours restored the line, using more than one million cubic yards of rock and material to rebuild embankments and install more than 35,000 linear feet of new track, one of the fastest and most extensive rail recovery efforts in CSX’s history.

Ingenuity That Shapes Lives™

For GFT, this project was about more than restoring rail service; it was about helping Appalachian communities reconnect and recover. Working side by side with CSX and public partners, we applied ingenuity that shapes lives, utilizing innovative solutions and a steadfast commitment to rebuild critical infrastructure that supports commerce, safety, and opportunity.

The Blue Ridge Subdivision reopening reminds us of what’s possible when collaboration meets purpose. Together with CSX, GFT helped transform disaster into renewal, delivering a stronger, safer, and more resilient corridor for generations to come.
