Glass elevator entrance to the 14th Street Subway Station in New York City at dusk

As one of Manhattan’s busiest transit hubs, the 14th Street Station Complex serves six subway lines, the PATH system, and more than 131,000 daily riders. However, its age and design presented significant challenges. The interconnected stations lacked essential features like elevators and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pathways, limiting access for individuals with disabilities and passengers with strollers or luggage. Congested circulation areas and outdated infrastructure further complicated the experience for commuters. A comprehensive solution was required to modernize the complex while maintaining uninterrupted service during construction

In collaboration with the Citnalta-Forte Joint Venture, our firm spearheaded the complete transformation of the 14th Street Station Complex into an efficient and fully accessible transit hub. This $300 million project was delivered on time and within budget through streamlined design-build collaboration, ensuring seamless progress on a challenging timeline.

Key improvements included creating ADA-compliant elevators and boarding areas, installing tactile warning strips, and expanding mezzanines to alleviate congestion. Upgraded ramps and handrails ensure smooth ADA-compliant navigation for all users, while modernized electrical systems and new elevator machine rooms provide reliable operations. Innovative phasing strategies allowed continuous service throughout the project, minimizing commuter disruptions.

Key Features

  • Enhanced Accessibility: Nine elevators and ADA-compliant ramps and pathways ensure inclusive, barrier-free access for all riders.
  • Improved Circulation: Reconfigured stairways, additional pathways, and expanded mezzanine areas streamline passenger flow.
  • Modern Technology: High-efficiency LED lighting, advanced Help Point screens, and upgraded power systems improve functionality and safety.
  • Artistic and Aesthetic Enhancements: Striking mosaics and refreshed wayfinding signage create an inviting and visually engaging environment.
  • Historic Preservation and Upgrades: Structural repairs, restored tilework, and improved agent booths blend modern functionality with the station’s historical character.

Outcomes

  • Barrier-free access across the station complex.
  • Enhanced navigation and reduced congestion for commuters.
  • A brighter, safer, and more welcoming transit environment with upgraded lighting, signage, and public art.
