Abraham Lincoln Elementary School Renovation and Addition
Client: Public Building Commission of Chicago
Our Role: Architecture and Project Management

Located in a densely populated residential area of Chicago, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School faced the dual challenges of accommodating a rapidly growing student population and preserving the architectural integrity of its historic, landmarked building. The Public Building Commission of Chicago engaged Muller2, now a part of GFT, to design a solution to expand capacity while complementing the existing structure. The project required careful design to meet the needs of the district, which demanded enhancement and respect of the existing architecture.
Leveraging a deep understanding of historic preservation and contemporary design, our team crafted a 42,000-square-foot addition and implemented strategic renovations to the existing facilities. A contemporary new wing seamlessly integrates with the original 1894 building and a 1939 addition, featuring matching brick, a terracotta rain–screen system, and modern dichroic glass accents. Lincoln Elementary School now stands as a model of adaptive reuse and sustainable design, blending historic preservation with forward-thinking educational infrastructure.
Key Features
- Sustainable Design: Incorporation of energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, LED lighting, low-flow water fixtures, local resources, durable, low-volatile organic compound materials, and on-site stormwater detention to manage 100-year rainfall events.
- Architectural Harmony: A contemporary addition mirrors the vertical masonry expressions and proportions of the 1939 wing to maintain the integrity of the 1894 structure.
- Playful Accents: A rooftop playground replaces a former asphalt playlot. Dichroic glass accents on the addition’s facade create dynamic, colorful reflections that bring vibrancy to the outdoor space.
Outcomes
The completed project transformed Lincoln Elementary School into a state-of-the-art educational facility that seamlessly merges its historical charm with contemporary functionality. Key outcomes include:
- Increased Capacity: The addition provides 17 new classrooms, a music room, a computer room, a kitchen and dining hall, and additional facilities to support the growing student population.
- Inclusive Design: Life safety upgrades, classroom enhancements, and a new elevator ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.
- Sustainability Leadership: The school’s LEED Silver certification highlights its commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency.
- Community Impact: Enhanced connections to public transportation and local community destinations reinforce the school’s role as a hub for social resilience.
- American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter, 2017, Distinguished Building Award.
