Berlin Station Roundabout
Client: Delaware County Engineer’s Office
Our Role: Lead Designer & Engineer of Record

With increasing traffic and new developments in the area, the Delaware County Engineer’s Office sought to improve safety and mobility at the intersection of Berlin Station Road and Piatt Road. The project initially included a full corridor reconstruction but was later divided into two phases to accelerate the roundabout construction, which was critical for providing access to two new housing developments. The challenge was to design a solution that minimized right-of-way impacts, integrated with ongoing land development, and addressed the community’s concerns—all while maintaining traffic flow and enhancing safety.
Our team developed an innovative peanut-shaped roundabout, a departure from traditional circular designs, to minimize right-of-way impacts on sensitive properties. This unique shape allowed for better alignment with the offset north and south legs of the intersection while improving safety and traffic efficiency.
Additionally, the project required widening Berlin Station Road to create a left-turn lane for Berlin High School, ensuring smooth and safe access for students and staff. Given the high school’s proximity, construction was strategically planned for summer to avoid disruptions to the school year.
Another key challenge was drainage design, as the surrounding area is relatively flat. Extensive coordination was necessary with adjacent developers to ensure stormwater was properly managed and integrated with planned detention ponds on nearby properties. The design also had to seamlessly connect with Part 2 of the project, which will widen and reconstruct additional sections of Berlin Station Road.
Key Features
- Innovative Peanut-Shaped Roundabout: Reduces right-of-way impacts and accommodates the offset intersection.
- Enhanced Safety and Traffic Flow: Provides continuous movement for vehicles, reducing congestion and crash risks.
- Improved High School Access: A dedicated left-turn lane enhances safety and efficiency for school traffic.
- Sustainable and Low-Maintenance Design: Roundabouts require less upkeep than traffic signals and improve long-term safety.
- Strategic Construction Timing: Work was completed during the summer to minimize disruptions for the local high schools.
Outcomes
- Improved Traffic Flow & Safety: Enhances movement and reduces congestion.
- Community Approval: Initially met with resistance but now receives positive feedback.
- Better Access: Improves connectivity to the high school and new developments.
- Increased Safety: Lowers severe crash risks compared to traditional intersections.
- Supports Growth: Facilitates new residential and commercial development.
- Long-Term Sustainability: Requires less maintenance than a signalized intersection.
- Innovative Engineering: Balances safety, efficiency, and community needs while solving design challenges.
