Chicago Metra Electric District South Side Station Modernization
Client: Metra
Our Role: Architecture

The Chicago Metra Electric District South Side Stations project reimagined the 79th Street/Chatham, 87th Street/Woodruff, and 103rd Street/Rosemoor stations — three aging commuter rail stations turned into welcoming, accessible gateways for Chicago’s South Side communities. Working within active rail viaducts and existing transportation infrastructure, GFT developed a cohesive design approach that renovated the stations while celebrating the unique identity of each surrounding neighborhood. The result is a family of contemporary transit destinations that strengthen connections between residents and the regional transportation network while elevating the everyday commuter experience.
Key Features
- New transparent station headhouses integrated into existing rail viaducts.
- Fully accessible circulation systems, including elevators and stairs.
- Standardized architectural framework across all three stations.
- Station-specific mosaics, colors, lighting patterns, and architectural details.
- Glazed circulation spaces designed to maximize visibility and daylight access.
- Integrated lighting, security, and mechanical systems within unified ceiling assemblies.
- New wayfinding and orientation elements throughout station environments.
Outcomes
- Improved accessibility through barrier-free connections between street and platform levels.
- Reduced navigation confusion through clearly legible station environments.
- Expanded access to the regional rail network for underserved South Side communities.
- Created recognizable civic landmarks within each community.
- Extended the life and value of existing transportation infrastructure.
- Delivered cleaner, more intuitive spaces that reduce friction and improve daily commutes.
- Supported equitable access to jobs, education, healthcare, and regional destinations.

An aerial perspective reveals the scale of Metra's South Side station modernization, where upgraded platforms, integrated lighting, and thoughtfully designed passenger spaces create a more welcoming and connected transit experience.
More

New station entries redefine the ground plane as clear, welcoming thresholds. Transparency, integrated lighting, and a shared kit-of-parts language establish visibility and legibility while creating bright, recognizable points of arrival within each neighborhood.
More

A station-specific color palette marks the threshold from street to platform. As passengers rise, the stair frames views of a custom ceiling and lighting composition, turning a required circulation path into a deliberate sequence of orientation, identity, and arrival.
More

Lighting, air distribution, security devices, and other mechanical requirements are consolidated within a continuous ceiling assembly. The strategy reduces visual clutter and turns one of the station’s few opportunities for design expression into a unified architectural surface.
More

Fully glazed circulation spaces bring daylight deep into the station and maintain visual connection to the surrounding neighborhood. Custom ceiling patterns, guardrails, and elevator enclosure finishes extend station identity through the headhouse while improving orientation, wayfinding, and safety.
More

With most station components dictated by operational standards, column enclosures became a rare opportunity for formal expression. Sculpted wraps transform a required structural element into a repeatable design tool that gives the platform rhythm, presence, and station specific character.
More

At the scale of the corridor, the elevator tower reads as civic infrastructure with architectural presence. Its height, illumination, and material continuity make the station visible from surrounding streets and establish a clear landmark for wayfinding.
