County of San Mateo Vertical Transportation Services
Client: County of San Mateo
Our Role: Design and Engineering

The county of San Mateo needed regular service to elevators and escalators in public facilities serving 765,000 residents southwest of the San Francisco Bay.
These vertical transportation options move people in the county’s medical centers, government buildings, and other public service spaces. Continuous, safe, and reliable operation is critical for these essential services to thrive.
Through an agreement with the county of San Mateo, GFT’s vertical transportation specialists provide professional vertical transportation services, including comprehensive design and engineering. The work covers ongoing service and maintenance on passenger elevators, escalators, and lift systems in 19 facilities.
Our elevator and escalator team conducted equipment condition surveys and maintenance audits of:
- Elevator machine rooms.
- Hoistways.
- Entrances.
- Car enclosures for traction elevators and hydraulic elevators.
- Escalator driving machines.
- Brakes.
- Motors.
- Controllers.
- Tracks.
This work resulted in a list of deficiencies for use by the county’s maintenance provider to facilitate safe operations and a state of good repair. The scope of services also includes performance and ride quality testing and contract review to assist the county in managing its vertical transportation systems.
GFT is also providing design, bid procurement, and construction administration for the modernization of commercial elevators in the San Mateo County Hall of Justice and Records and Maguire Correctional Facility.
