Meadowlands Pedestrian Bridge Expansion at MetLife Stadium
Client: New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority
Our Role: Architectural, Civil, Structural, and Electrical Design

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) is advancing plans to improve pedestrian access between Parking Deck A and MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. During major events, the existing enclosed pedestrian bridge experienced crowd congestion, constrained circulation, limited daylighting, and no views to the outdoors affecting both safety and comfort.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, the site requires expanded pedestrian capacity and improved connectivity while maintaining operations over an active roadway and within a dense event environment. The solution will integrate with existing infrastructure and handle high visitor volumes during peak periods.
GFT is supporting the expansion of pedestrian infrastructure at the Meadowlands Sports Complex by designing a companion pedestrian bridge that supplements the existing crossing over Route 120. The project will improve access between Parking Deck A, MetLife Stadium, and surrounding destinations while enhancing comfort, safety, and wayfinding for event-day crowds.
Working in collaboration with the client and project partners, GFT is providing architectural, civil, structural, and electrical design services. The team is conducting site visits, coordinating across disciplines, and developing pedestrian flow modeling to evaluate circulation and egress under peak event conditions. The design prioritizes visibility in and out of the new bridge, passive ventilation, clear and intuitive movement through the bridge and its connections, lighting integrated with the architecture, and an improved aesthetic for the Meadowlands.
Key Features
- Companion pedestrian bridge expanding capacity alongside the existing crossing.
- Vision glass enhances visibility, daylight, and passive security.
