Midway International Airport Security Checkpoint Expansion
Client: Chicago Department of Aviation
Our Role: Architecture

Chicago Midway International Airport, a key transportation hub, faced growing passenger volumes that strained its security checkpoint. Congestion, inefficiencies, and long wait times created a stressful experience for travelers. The physical separation of the landside and airside terminals by Cicero Avenue further complicated security and pedestrian flow. The Chicago Department of Aviation sought to improve efficiency, streamline screening, and enhance the traveler experience while maintaining strict safety and sustainability standards.
Muller2, now part of GFT, designed a modern security operations and passenger circulation expansion. The new structure connects the landside and airside terminals, while a 1:50 gradual slope eliminates the need for ramps or stairs and improves both accessibility and flow between terminal spaces.
A clerestory window and sculptural ceiling elements maximize natural light and create a calming atmosphere for passengers. The expansion incorporates reinforced airside barriers, enhanced monitoring systems, and blast-resistant components to strengthen security. The work transforms the routine checkpoint into a streamlined, modern gateway that improves security, efficiency, and passenger comfort while reinforcing Chicago’s commitment to sustainable, forward-thinking transportation solutions.
Key Features
- An 80,000-square-foot expansion spans Cicero Avenue, linking the landside and airside terminals for seamless passenger movement.
- A centralized security checkpoint with an expanded queuing area enhances processing efficiency and reduces bottlenecks.
- Prefabricated pedestrian bridges integrate lighting to improve aesthetics and functionality while reducing construction-related disruptions.
- Reinforced security infrastructure includes structural enhancements and advanced monitoring systems.
- Sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems are integrated, including high-performance exterior materials, LED lighting, and recycled-content finishes.
Outcomes
- Faster passenger processing reduces wait times during peak periods.
- Improved pedestrian circulation allows for a clear separation between entering and exiting travelers.
- A stress-free screening experience is supported by natural light, an intuitive layout, and open sightlines.
- Work is completed without acquiring neighboring land, preserving the surrounding neighborhoods.
- Environmental impact is minimized by integrating energy-efficient systems and sustainable materials.
- A transformed, high-performance airport hub reinforces Chicago’s leadership in smart and sustainable airport design.
