Modernizing WMATA’s Backup Operations Control Center
Client: Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)
Our Role: Lead Design Consultant

GFT supported the WMATA in modernizing a mission-critical backup operations control center designed to ensure uninterrupted system oversight and data continuity. The project centered on transforming existing space into a high-performance, data-driven environment capable of replicating primary control center functions during outages or emergencies. This initiative was essential to strengthening operational resilience, safeguarding critical systems, and supporting increasing demands on digital infrastructure. GFT’s integrated approach aligned data center design principles — redundancy, scalability, and uptime — with robust power and facility systems to deliver a secure, reliable, and future-ready operational hub.
Key Features
- Design of a resilient, backup control environment with integrated data center and IT infrastructure.
- Dedicated IT/local area network (LAN) equipment rooms supporting mission-critical systems and network operations.
- Redundant network architecture with dual-path connectivity, virtual local area network (VLAN) segmentation, and high-availability switching.
- Integration of audiovisual, monitoring, and communications systems with centralized control platforms.
- Deployment of video wall and real-time data visualization systems for operational awareness.
- Coordination of cybersecurity-compliant systems aligned with enterprise standards (e.g., National Institute of Standards and Technology frameworks).
- Scalable infrastructure to support future digital modernization and increased data demands.
- Robust power systems, including uninterruptible power supply (UPS), emergency backup power, and redundant distribution strategies.
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and environmental controls designed to support continuous uptime for sensitive equipment.
- Phased implementation approach to maintain live operations during upgrades.
Outcomes
- Increased system uptime and reliability through integrated data center and power redundancy strategies.
- Enhanced protection and continuity of mission-critical data and operations.
- Improved real-time monitoring, coordination, and decision-making capabilities.
- Scalable, future-ready infrastructure supporting evolving digital and operational needs.
- Reduced risk of service disruption through resilient design and backup capabilities.
- Optimized performance of IT systems through coordinated environmental and power systems.
- Seamless transition and minimal operational impact during implementation phases.
