P.S. 47Q Chris Galas School Modernization and Expansion
Client: New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA)
Our Role: Architecture

P.S. 47Q Chris Galas School serves a diverse school community within the waterfront of Broad Channel, Queens. The existing facility required modernization after years of aging infrastructure, accessibility challenges, and facility limitations. This project provided a new replacement facility that reflects the character and identity of the Broad Channel community. Located near Jamaica Bay, the project also required design solutions that responded to floodplain conditions and a high groundwater table.
GFT provided architectural design services focused on creating a resilient, welcoming, and flexible educational environment for learning, inclusion, and long-term adaptability. The team approached the project holistically, integrating accessibility, circulation, and program improvements. The replacement facility was carefully planned to enhance daily student experience while strengthening the school’s role as a neighborhood asset.
