Rachel Carson Bridge Rehabilitation

Client: Allegheny County
Our Role: Inspection, Design, and Construction Services

Four yellow bridges crossing over a large body of water near a city with large buildings.

The Rachel Carson (9th Street) Bridge, one of Pittsburgh’s iconic “Three Sisters” bridges, has been a vital connection over the Allegheny River since its construction between 1924 and 1928. As one of the first self-anchored suspension spans in the United States, it holds both historical significance and structural importance. However, age-related deterioration posed increasing safety concerns, necessitating a comprehensive rehabilitation to extend its service life while preserving its architectural heritage.

Allegheny County faced the challenge of rehabilitating the bridge to ensure structural integrity while maintaining its historical character. The project required extensive repairs, including deck replacement, steel rehabilitation, drainage and lighting updates, and full superstructure repainting—all while minimizing disruptions to Pittsburgh’s downtown traffic and riverfront activity.

Our team led the inspection, design, and construction efforts to restore the Rachel Carson Bridge while enhancing its longevity and safety. The rehabilitation project focused on structural and aesthetic improvements, ensuring the bridge remained both functional and historically authentic.

Key aspects of the rehabilitation included:

  • Structural Repairs: Steel repairs to the stringer and floor beam connections, stiffening girder, and sidewalk brackets to reinforce the bridge’s load-bearing capacity.
  • Deck and Sidewalk Replacement: A full deck and sidewalk replacement improved durability and pedestrian safety.
  • Superstructure Restoration: Complete repainting of the steel eye-bar suspension system protected the bridge from further corrosion.
  • Drainage and Lighting Upgrades: Modernized drainage systems and lighting enhancements improved safety, visibility, and resilience.
  • Substructure Rehabilitation: Upper substructure repairs strengthened the foundation while maintaining the bridge’s historical integrity.

Key Features

  • Preservation of Historic Design: The bridge’s signature self-anchored suspension system and architectural elements were carefully restored to maintain its landmark status.
  • Extended Service Life: Structural upgrades ensure long-term durability and safety for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • Enhanced Pedestrian Access: Reconstructed sidewalks improve accessibility and walkability.
  • Modernized Infrastructure: Improved drainage and lighting systems provide a safer and more resilient bridge for the future.

Outcomes

The Rachel Carson Bridge rehabilitation successfully balanced historical preservation with modern engineering solutions, securing its role as a key connector in downtown Pittsburgh for decades to come. The project enhances safety, extends the bridge’s lifespan, and preserves an essential part of the city’s architectural heritage.

  • Sustained Landmark Status: The rehabilitation ensures that one of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable bridges remains a functional and historical asset.
  • Improved Safety and Accessibility: Structural repairs and sidewalk improvements provide a safer experience for all bridge users.
  • Infrastructure Resilience: Updated drainage and steel reinforcements protect against future wear and environmental factors.
