Grove City, OH
Stringtown Road & I-270 Interchange
Client: Ohio Department of Transportation – District 6
Our Role: Lead Designer & Engineer of Record

The area south of Columbus, Ohio, has experienced increasing traffic congestion and safety concerns, particularly at the interchanges of I-71, I-270, and Stringtown Road. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 6 sought a solution to improve traffic flow, reduce weaving conflicts, and enhance overall safety for both local and highway travelers. Given the close spacing of these interchanges, a traditional widening approach would not adequately address the operational challenges.
To meet ODOT’s needs, our team designed a Collector-Distributor (C-D) lane system along I-71, separating local interchange traffic from high-speed through traffic. This innovative solution improved weaving operations and reduced congestion by creating dedicated lanes for vehicles entering and exiting at Stringtown Road and I-270.
The introduction of C-D lanes necessitated a complete reconstruction of the interchanges, including modifications to entrance and exit ramps. Our team collaborated closely with adjacent projects to ensure seamless integration with future developments, optimize cost efficiencies, and enhance overall network connectivity.
Key Features
- Collector-Distributor (C-D) Lanes: Improved traffic flow by separating interchange-bound vehicles from high-speed I-71 traffic.
- Ramp Reconstruction: Redesigned access points at Stringtown Road and I-270 to optimize safety and efficiency.
- Seamless Integration: Coordinated with adjacent projects to accommodate future construction and maximize cost savings.
- Safety Enhancements: Reduced weaving conflicts, minimizing crash risks and improving the driving experience.
Outcomes
This project significantly improves safety and mobility for the Grove City area, enhancing local and regional connectivity. By mitigating congestion and reducing potential crash points, the new interchange design benefits both daily commuters and long-haul travelers.
- Increased Safety: Reduced weaving movements lower crash risks and improve traffic predictability.
- Reduced Congestion: Dedicated C-D lanes streamline highway operations, improving travel times.
- Future-Ready Design: Accommodates upcoming infrastructure improvements and regional growth.
